    Question

Sorry for the noob questions, but here goes.....

I stumbled upon a pair of Altec's, supposedly studio monitors, model # 98468. Does anyone know anything about these ? They have 511B horns, not sure what drivers. The original woofers are gone, what should be there ? The guy has some 421-8H and 921-8A woofers available. Will they work ? Suitable for home use ? Low end response ? I didn't get too good a look at them, but the cabinets looked to be sealed, not vented.

    Thanks for any help !

Here is some info on the 9846 to get you started.
The woofer should be the 411 8a. Its the only one
    compatible with that cabinet.

Thanks very much ! Looks like they're not what I'm looking for, with only 91.5 db sensitivity.

The 9846 sensitivity is around 94db/w/m. The 91.5 spec in the product literature is based on an old standard 4' measurement distance. They are a sealed enclosure and are only meant to work with the 411-8A woofer.

I would not write off this system so quickly. I rank it amongst the best Altecs made. In my opinion, it is better than A7 based systems like the Valencia with deeper bass response. 411-8A's show up relatively frequently on Ebay at reasonable cost.

Thanks for the input Don. I better check to see if the 30923 attenuator/equalizer network is still there. I was told the crossovers were sold, but they will probably be easy to find by comparison, no ?

Just to give you encouragement, the speakers are well worth
the restoration. Ours get a lot of play time here. We keep
them at low-normal volume and still get stunning bass that
goes right to the bone at times. Combine that with the excellent
dispersion of the 511 horn, and you have a "keeper" for sure.
Let us know what your going to do ....... Art

The Altec Barcelona is the same speaker in a fancy cabinet.

Don provides these excellent references for us. Thanks Don!
